Friends, today we’re bringing you the very top of the latest YouGov ranking of the most popular personalities in the United Kingdom. You may be surprised to discover that the list isn’t made up exclusively of actors. In fact, the top two places belong to… Well, keep reading to find out!

No. 5 – Judi Dench – 79%

Taking fifth place in the hearts of the British public is the legendary actress and national icon Judi Dench. She has repeatedly been voted Britain’s finest actress. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to theatre, film and public life, she was appointed a Dame by the Queen. She won an Academy Award for her performance in Shakespeare in Love and is perhaps best known to modern audiences for playing M in the James Bond film series. Dame Judi Dench has enjoyed a remarkable and distinguished career that continues well into her later years.

No. 4 – Tom Hanks – 80%

There’s a popular joke that says: Never get into a vehicle driven by a Tom Hanks character. Although he often portrays dependable, trustworthy people, he also appears in films where things tend to go spectacularly wrong. One of the best-known examples is Cast Away (2000). You’ll almost certainly remember him as Forrest Gump in the film of the same name, Joe Fox in the romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail, Captain Miller in Saving Private Ryan, Paul Edgecomb in The Green Mile, along with many other unforgettable performances. The fact that Tom Hanks is American certainly hasn’t stopped the British from placing him fourth in the ranking.

No. 3 – Samuel L. Jackson – 82%

Samuel L. Jackson has created some of cinema’s most memorable characters, including his roles in Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight, The 51st State, as well as Nick Fury throughout the Marvel films, to name just a few. His acting style is so distinctive that his name alone is often enough to guarantee a film’s success. You might never guess that, as a child, Jackson struggled with a stammer and that performing in plays became part of what helped him overcome it. We can certainly be grateful to the speech therapist who recognised his talent and encouraged him to pursue acting.

No. 2 – Stephen King – 83%

We wouldn’t be surprised if Stephen King were the most widely read author in the world. An incredibly prolific writer, many of his novels have been adapted for the screen, opening a dark window into the imagination of generations of readers and cinema-goers alike. The undisputed master of horror is the author of Cujo, The Dead Zone, ‘Salem’s Lot, The Shawshank Redemption, The Stand, Pet Sematary, and countless other bestsellers. Having grown up in poverty, King is now a millionaire who frequently supports aspiring writers through generous charitable donations.

No. 1 – David Attenborough – 91%

On 8 May 2026, Britain’s most beloved naturalist, geologist, zoologist and wildlife documentary filmmaker, David Attenborough, celebrated his 100th birthday. His life’s work has inspired generations of young nature lovers, while landmark series such as Life on Earth showcase his extraordinary talent as both a storyteller and an environmentalist dedicated to protecting one of our planet’s greatest treasures—its wildlife and natural world. Today, Attenborough’s voice is arguably the most recognisable voice on Earth.
