How to express politely in English – 2nd part

How to express politely in English – 2nd part

Training centre Raya London would be delighted if it could help its students and friends better fit into English reality and culture. At first glance, manners seem to lose their meaning. But do not be fooled – upbringing will always be a currency of high value, and the polite person can communicate freely, without looking stiff or hypocritical. Especially English manners have very deep roots in the past and it is good to stick to this system of expression. This will always pay us back and be appreciated by our interlocutors.

So, let’s start with the simple saying “Please give me …”. It’s simpler to say “Give me the salt!”, But even if we add “please,” another effect will be achieved with “Can you pass me the salt, please?”. More traditional is better! More polite – double better!

The word “Mr.” (Mister) has not yet expired. It is, however, used when we know the family of the person to whom we turn. This may be, for example, someone older than us or our friend’s father. In this case, we refer to “Mr. Brown, “for example. But if our name is unknown, it is enough to say “Sir”.

Little different things are with Mrs. (Missis, or as you can see in the literature – Missus). This is an address to a married woman. We are not always sure whether we are talking to one. At the same time, many women today do not marry and do not change their siblings with a partner. It seems as if the “Ms.” (Miss) is more appropriate today.

Speaking by phone also has its own specificity. If we are called and are looking for another person from our environment or if we cannot speak right away, we can easily say “Wait!”. But we’d better say “Can you hold, please?” Or “Can you keep it, please?”). Thus the ordained address passes into a polite prayer for patience. In any case, it will be better understood.

We are in a situation where we want something that we cannot or do not want to do. We should not just cut off “No!”. Too categorical to the English way of respectful expression! It’s much better to say “I’m Afraid I Can’t.” (I’m afraid I could not).

Business is also good to know some rules. For example, do not put negative expressions in your speech. To say directly “This is a bad idea!” Is unacceptable. Much better would be the phrase “I do not think that’s such a good idea!”. Yes, it is definitely grammatically more complicated, but it shows positivity that goes hand in hand with the upbringing and good attitude towards the interlocutor, which is a must.

Various examples we might still be applicable in favor of the thesis that the polite and mannered speech is profitable. The English language, by its very nature, gives many opportunities for such expression. And it comes not only from the relationship of the aristocracy and of behavior characteristic of the lower classes of society in the past. For us, the Bulgarians, such manners may sound exaggerated. But, we assure you, in English this is quite right.

We will be happy if you contact Training Center “Raya” London with any questions you care about the English language and English grammar. Suggest us the next topics on our blog!

How to express ourselves politely in English – 1st part

How to express ourselves politely in English – 1st part

Courtesy is important. Even when we are invited to say something unpleasant, if we do it in a polite and polite way, it will be perceived easier. In Bulgaria we have been taught to say ‘please’, ‘thank you’, to talk to you. Let’s see which expressions in the English language will contribute to our polite and respectful expression to the interlocutor.

Current advice will do us good, especially if we are doing business in the UK. Read them and enter them in your dictionary!

As we have already mentioned, polite expression mitigates the effect of an unpleasant message. For example, you have to delay with an order. You know your client will not be charmed. But the English are a nurtured nation, they will not react as sharply as we, the temperate Bulgarians. This, however, does not mean that we do not owe them some mitigating words and expressions in the message. For example, if we want to say:

-I’ll be late at the end of the project. – There will be a delay in the completion of the project.

it is good to bring it more delicately:

-I think there might be a little delay in completing the project. – I’m afraid there may be a slight delay in the completion of the project.

The mild, bit, a bit bit, slightly, etc., mitigating effect of the messages are the words. All of them cover the Bulgarian “light”, “little”, “weak”. For example, the too straightforward sentence “We will go out of the budget.”  may be expressed as “We might run slightly over budget.”

The questioning negation is also mitigating. Here is an example:

-You must refuse the order! – We should cancel the order!

this may be replaced by:

Do not we have to cancel the order? – Should not we cancel the order?

In English it is not good to express a direct accusation, especially when we are not sure someone is guilty. That’s why Passive Voice is used. Here, again, an example:

-You broke your pen! – You have broken my pen!

And we could speak not as direct observers, so we do not sound like accusers:

– My pen was broken. – My pen has been broken.

These and other ways of expression contribute to our good relationships with people. But in order for us to be aware of them, we should learn the English language and especially the polite phrases in it. At the Raya London Training Center, we are ready to give you a variety of tips and help you with your daily or business communications.

English language teaching should not be an end in itself but must meet the needs of our real public and private engagements. That’s why we’re trying to offer working examples with our short articles. If you have difficulty communicating in English, or if you have any questions, tell us the topics of our next material, which we hope will be useful to you.

English Language Courses in London?

English Language Courses in London?

A lot of clients and compatriots in general often ask me where they can go to English language courses in London. They are keen to improve their English. I am on the principle that when a person needs service, it is best to turn to a professional rather than trying to be a master of everything. So I can concentrate and develop in directions that I am attracted to and in which I can achieve good results.

Regarding English courses – it was very important to find  language schools and teachers that I should recommend. I wanted to make sure that people would be happy and would not do a bearish service.

Looking for English lessons, many compatriots immediately think of free or online (and if both) English courses. But there is no such  a thing as” free lunch”. From time to time, there are advertisements and places that are supposed to offer “freaks” (it is deliberately written freaks to not index the “free” English language courses in London, but people, who have visited them, have told me that no one does pay attention to them and learn nothing.

You have to remember that time in the UK is money and nothing is free – so that a teacher can teach his students free of charge, someone else will have to pay for the time, the hall, the electricity and the school materials. This country has no problems with the distribution of  English language and does not give extra money for immigrants to learn a language.

Maybe some church or college might offer open courses in English, but again, we rely on the quality of teaching and whether you will learn something or you will waste your time (and money because time is money here, even when something is free).

I spoke to friends and acquaintances, and two of them mentioned Raya London training center as they shared that they were happy. I contacted the company, presented myself and told them what I was looking for – they were very polite and kind. During my conversation with George (the person for contact I was speaking with) we came to the conclusion that it would be best for me to judge personally how they teach, what their course is and whether it is for me. So we agreed to go and attend a two-hour lesson.

It was not easy to find free time, but in a few days I went to their office in East London one night and spent 2 hours listening and even participating in one of their English lessons. There were 10 compatriots in the classroom, most of them came straight after work. Everyone had written their homework, they had textbooks, and on a massive table they took part in the English lesson led by Sofia Aneva. I was also fascinated by the students’ diligence – some of them were not easy, but they did not give up. Usually when a person pays for something, he feels more engaged in it, he gives his money for lessons, and it is in his interest to get the most out of this training.

To admit honestly I was very pleasantly enthused both by the classroom and the teaching materials, but mostly by the teacher. I really enjoyed the English language course and I think it’s worth a person to enroll on it, especially when you need English every day. With a good advice, I can recommend Sofia Aneva and Raya London training center to anyone who asks me where in London I can study English in a friendly atomosphere without feeling shame or inconvenience.

“Words don’t come easy…” A few useful tips to overcome speaking difficulties

“Words don’t come easy…” A few useful tips to overcome speaking difficulties

You have studied thousands of words, you have learned the important grammar but you are still struggling when you have to speak. There are different researches done by scientists about this phenomenon. In this article I would like to give you a few simple and useful tips how to overcome your difficulties speaking English.

1. Good listening

When speaking a foreign language you may be more focused on to how you speak, what words to use and is it correct or not so you do not pay enough attention to what people tell you.

Listen to what other people tell you and try to use the same grammar or even words so you can help yourself.

2. Slow down

In your mother language you are fluent and do not think about the speed you speak with but in a foreign language you should speak slowly and allow yourself time to think about what you say.
Here are some phrases to use so you have the needed time and still keep the conversation alive:

Repeat the question and add “ Oh, it is a good question. I have never thought about that.”
“Let me think for a moment.”
“ Well I suppose……”

3. Use fixed phrases.

There is a great variety of fixed phrases so you can start with some of them, learn them by heart and use them to save time and think about your next sentence.

Here are some fixed phrases to start with:
“ Oh, come on!”
“ I am just kidding.”
“ Sorry to bother you but…..”

4. Learn sentences not just words

When you study a new word try to remember a few sentences with it, too. It will be helpful when you have to use the word it will appear a whole sentence ready to say.

You may find it nice and fun to remember sentences while listening to songs but with the lyrics on screan.
“ Words don’t come easy…”

5. Produce as much language as possible.

The more you speak the better you will become. To provoke yourself speaking find a native English friend. This way you will speak English in a relaxed environment and it will be easier.

You can write. It is not speaking but it will be your production and it is good as a practice.
